Cucoloris , kookaloris, cookaloris or cucalorus all are different names for a gobo with holes. It is commonly referred to as cookie. So when a gobo has holes what happens is the light passing through these holes or designs create patterns on the surface it falls. Cookie is used to create a feel of natural light, imitating the look of light coming through a window, blinds, leafy canopy etc. So it could be said that any unnatural pattern used to create a shadow or so called patterned illumination is a cookie.

Cookies are generally made from black cardboard but you will also find hard cookies made of thin plywood or heavy poster board, another variation called “celo cookies” are soft cookies made from plastic impregnated screen (the ones found in a storm window). Yet another variation is “brancholorises” or “dingles” which are simply tree limbs or other naturally available things that can be placed between the light and the subject.

Depending on the angle and the intensity of the light passing through the cookie, the look and feel of the shadows it generates also changes, enabling you to create moody feel to any scene.
